Nigel’s work explores emotional resonances. His landscapes often from the welsh marches are created through being immersed in the environment. In all his work he studies the emotive character of his subject, often starting a painting plein aire or from a real sitter. He begins with drawing and redrawing his subject. He then creates the finished work in the studio looking and changing the layered painted canvas, to create the final, expressive piece. When painting he is drawn toward emotional expressiveness, aspects of the visual world chiming with particular psychological feeling such as isolation, coldness, sadness ect.. These aspects and attempts to catch these often changing moments and elements is at the heart of Nigel’s work. His work attempts to reflect these emotive observations by painting in a range of ways; the paint is applied expressively, splashed, scrubbed or dripped over the canvas. Nigel’s paintings are recognizable as ether portraits or landscapes. They have a clear likeness to what is seen yet the departure is also clear with changes in colour light, temperature, gesture and expression to capture more of the lived experience of being there with the person or immersed in the place. Nigel regularly exhibits in galleries in and around the region, he has undertaken commissions and his work is in private collections across the UK.
